Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a direct threat to the United States on Sunday, vowing retaliation that would inflict unprecedented damage following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The warning, broadcast on state television, marked one of Khamenei’s most aggressive statements toward Washington in years.
“Americans should expect greater damage and heavier blows than ever before,” Khamenei declared, addressing a gathering of military commanders in Tehran. His remarks were punctuated by chants of Death to America from the assembled officers. The speech followed confirmed U.S. strikes on Iran’s Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites, which Tehran described as a “grave miscalculation.”
Analysts suggest the threat could signal imminent attacks on U.S. assets in the Middle East or through proxy forces. “Khamenei’s language implies escalation, not just rhetoric,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The Pentagon has placed all regional bases on high alert, while the State Department urged American citizens to avoid travel to Iraq and Syria.
