According to a report by The Times of Israel on Sunday, August 3, 2025, State-run media in Iran said that the Supreme National Security Council, the country’s highest security body, has formed a new National Defense Council to fortify the country’s defense apparatus.

Following a 12-day confrontation with Israel in June 2025, which ended with a truce, this decision was announced on August 3, 2025.

Iran has restructured its security system with the establishment of this council to deal with changing regional threats. The president will preside over the National Defense Council, which will consist of senior military commanders, important ministers, and other top officials.

Reviewing and updating Iran’s defense strategy and enhancing the capabilities of its armed forces are its key responsibilities. Among these measures is the need to update military facilities, enhance communication and cooperation among defense agencies, and guarantee preparedness for any dangers that may arise.

In order to promote a more unified strategy for national security, the council is working to simplify decision-making procedures. Fars news agency reported on August 1, 2025, that Iran’s security framework underwent larger structural reforms, including the formation of the council.

Recent geopolitical concerns have prompted Iran to implement these reforms in an effort to strengthen its defensive mechanisms. There has to be a stronger and more flexible defense system after the 12-day conflict with Israel, which created a lot of instability in the region.

Iran hopes to shore up its weak spots that were highlighted by the conflict and be ready for anything the future throws at it by forming this council. To further improve operational efficiency, the National Defense Council will also prioritize the integration of innovative technology and the improvement of military training programs.
