A famous Iranian nuclear scientist, Mohammad Reza Seddighi Sabre, was apparently killed in an Israeli bombing in northern Iran, according to Iranian state media, citing local sources (The Guardian). The strike took place prior to the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran by US President Donald Trump. Near his parents’ house in Astaneh-ye Ashrafiyeh, Gilan Province, Seddighi Sabre was attacked.
Sabre was the head of Iran’s Shahid Karimi Group inside the Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND). There is strong evidence that his group is involved in nuclear and explosives research. According to Iranian media, Sabre survived a separate Israeli attack on their Tehran house a few days before the death of her 17-year-old son. Due to his significant role in the proliferation of WMD, Sabre was sanctioned in May 2025 by the US Treasury Department.
A subfield of nuclear weapons research, sympathetic detonation studies, was one in which he participated. Iran has blamed Israeli intelligence agencies, especially Mossad, for a slew of targeted killings of nuclear scientists, and this assassination follows that pattern. Reports indicate that Israel has allegedly targeted and killed several nuclear scientists in an effort to derail Iran’s nuclear program since the beginning of the current conflict.
The assassination adds fuel to the fire as tensions rise in the midst of the truce, which President Trump established and asked both sides to respect. The latest strike has gone unremarked upon by Israeli officials. This strike exemplifies Israel’s continuing clandestine war against Iran’s nuclear aspirations, in which the Jewish state is methodically attacking strategic individuals and locations. The Iranian government has slammed these moves as illegal and threatened retaliation to defend its independence.
