Former Minister of Education and World Bank Vice President, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the immediate reinstatement of security personnel for suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.
This follows the federal government’s recent filing of criminal charges against Akpoti-Uduaghan over statements she made on national television, where she alleged a plot to assassinate her involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The charges, brought by the Attorney-General of the Federation, accuse Akpoti-Uduaghan of defamation after her April 3, 2025 interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
The senator’s allegations have since led to her suspension from the Senate and the withdrawal of her official police security detail.
Reacting to these developments, Ezekwesili issued a strongly worded memo to President Tinubu, posted on her official X handle, condemning what she described as “the latest act of State Capture” and a coordinated attempt to silence Akpoti-Uduaghan for raising serious allegations against powerful figures.
She asserted, “The criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is an act of gross irresponsibility, illegality, and irrationality. You must take responsibility for this desecration of our Democracy.”
Ezekwesili urged Tinubu to “walk back from this latest scandal and terminate this egregious violation of the rights of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan immediately.”
She further demanded that the president discipline the Attorney General and instruct him to withdraw the “frivolous and dangerous criminal charges” against the senator.
Central to Ezekwesili’s demands is the immediate reinstatement of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s security detail, which was reportedly withdrawn on the orders of the Senate President—a move she described as “a petty act of retaliation, intimidation and gross abuse of power.”
She insisted, “Instruct the IG of Police to immediately reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti ‘s security personnel which the Senate President ordered withdrawn in a petty act of retaliation, intimidation and gross abuse of power against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for daring to allege that he sexually harassed her.”
Ezekwesili’s intervention comes amid growing concerns about the safety of female lawmakers and the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
She concluded her memo with a pointed warning to President Tinubu: “It is a Choice and every Choice has consequences. Will you choose wisdom on this matter?”
