A PDP Chieftain, Segun Showunmi, has offered an analysis of how Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi managed to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos during the 2023 elections, while highlighting fundamental differences in regional voting behaviors.

In an interview with News Central TV from 5:43, Segun Showunmi characterized voting patterns in his native Southwest as inherently diverse: “The Yorubas, my people, have always had a republican outlook to election. We never go to an election where one person gets all the votes in our zone. Literally, we vote, and we don’t do all this one-way traffic that others do.”

He cited recent electoral evidence supporting his claim: “After all, Atiku won in Osun State, and that’s how the Yorubas are.”

He contrasted this with what he described as more homogeneous voting in the Southeast: “In Peter Obi’s enclave, they gave him 98% of the vote, and that’s quite troubling, how they even achieve that.”

The PDP chieftain downplayed Obi’s personal appeal as a factor in his Southwest performance: “But the fact of the matter is that, even if he hadn’t been Peter, if he had been any smart Igbo person, the numbers you see Peter had gotten in the Southwest, that person would have gotten that.”

He also attributed opposition success in the South West region to demographic factors: “In PDP, I can tell you for free that our numbers in the Southwest, because we’re always in opposition here, we’ve always made up those numbers by non-indigenous groups.”

Showunmi dismissed analyses crediting Obi’s gubernatorial record or personal qualities for his electoral performance, asserting that several political leaders could claim more substantial achievements during their tenures as governors than Obi accomplished in Anambra State.
