Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, late MKO Abiola Ally, recently shared his thoughts on the regional classification of Kwara and Kogi States during an interview on Agbaletu TV Podcast. He argued that both states should be recognized as part of the Yoruba region rather than being grouped with the North.
According to Kazeem, the majority of people in Kwara and Kogi are of Yoruba descent about 80% in Kwara and 60% in Kogi. He questioned why residents of these states often identify as Northerners, suggesting that this does not reflect their cultural background. He also pointed out that if they wish to associate with the North Central zone, Niger State would be a more accurate boundary.
In his words,
“If you talk about Kwara and Kogi State, it’s still under Yoruba. In Kwara today, 80% Yoruba, in Kogi 60%. So why would they attribute themselves as Northerners. It’s not supposed to be like that. If they are claiming north central, it is Niger state which is their boundary they should have used.”
