Babafemi Ojudu, a former senator and presidential aide, has reacted to a statement made by former Governor Kayode Fayemi. Ojudu said he was horrified to see Fayemi describe the 2012 protest against fuel subsidy removal as just a political game. He said the protest was not a game for him and others who genuinely cared about the suffering of the Nigerian people.
In a post Ojudu shared on his Facebook page, he said during the protest, he and other senators decided to take a dangerous road trip from Lagos to Abuja to raise critical motions on the issue in the Senate.
Ojudu said he travelled from Lagos to Abuja by road because flights were shut down across the country. He said Senator Remi Tinubu and Gbenga Ashafa were with him. He disclosed that in Lagos, they narrowly escaped rioters and in Ibadan some people tried to burn them alive. He said they were lucky to survive and return to Lagos safely.
In Ojudu’s words: “We narrowly escaped rioters in Lagos. In Ibadan, we were not so fortunate — missiles were hurled at us, and attempts were made to set us ablaze. By sheer providence, we made it back to Lagos alive. Senators Remi Tinubu and Gbenga Ashafa were with me. Had anything happened to them, that weight would have been on my conscience forever”
