The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Mr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba, has urged President Bola Tinubu to ignore calls asking him to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima before the 2027 elections. Some groups have argued that Nigeria should not continue with a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Eba reminded Nigerians that the issue of religion should not be the focus when choosing leaders. He explained that in 1993, late Chief MKO Abiola, a Muslim, ran with Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, another Muslim, and that election was one of the most widely accepted in Nigeria’s history before it was annulled.

Eba said President Tinubu made a wise decision by choosing Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate in 2023, not because of religion, but because of his competence and leadership qualities. He described Shettima as a man who values tolerance and diversity.

To prove his point, Eba highlighted Shettima’s choices in his personal team. “In case you don’t know who Senator Kashim Shettima is, this is a man whose Chief Security Officer is an Igbo man, a Christian. His head of media, Mr. Stanley, is also an Igbo man from Imo State. Many of his domestic staff are Christians too,” Eba said.

He argued that these choices show Shettima is not driven by religion, but by merit and ability.
