Dr. Suleiman Suleiman, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Communication, Abuja, has expressed concern over the decision by some northern states to close schools for Ramadan. He said that in 2024, none of the top 10 states with the best WAEC performance came from the North.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust TV from 20:13, Suleiman said that despite the already existing gap in education, four northern states: Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Bauchi have chosen to shut down schools for Ramadan. He stated that this decision is difficult to understand, considering the need for better academic performance in the region.

In Suleiman’s words: “In 2024 the states with the highest WAEC performance, the top there is not a single northern state among the top 10 and you are now having four states from the north saying they are shutting down schools for something that is not really necessary (sic). It beats my imagination”
