Professor Usman Yusuf, a well-known Nigerian doctor and political commentator, has spoken out about the current state of politics in Nigeria. At a recent event which was shared by SYMFONI TV, he expressed his concern over the many endorsements and defections happening in the country, comparing it to what happens in North Korea — a country where political choices are often controlled and one-sided.

“Today I’m seeing mass endorsement, mass defections. I saw it the other day, and I was telling my wife, am I in North Korea or in Nigeria?” Yusuf said. He called it a “vulgar display of rascality,” especially at a time when many Nigerians are suffering from poverty and hardship.

He reminded the audience that this has happened before. “Abacha was endorsed by everybody. Jonathan was endorsed by 21 parties. What happened?” he asked. According to Yusuf, real leadership needs two important things: the support of the people and the approval of God.

Yusuf also talked about the issues of religion and ethnicity in Nigerian politics. He believes these are not the real problems, but are being used to divide the people. Referring to the Muslim-Muslim ticket in the last election, he said it was not for the good of the country but for selfish reasons.

Speaking to the youth, he encouraged them not to let religion or ethnicity divide them. “We are here to fight for what is right,” he said, even if it means going to prison and coming out stronger.
