In a recent interview, Professor Anthony Akbazue, a human rights activist and constitutional lawyer, praised Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Olukayode Kekere-Ekun for the reforms she has brought to the judiciary within one year in office. He described her rise as remarkable, noting how she moved through every level of the judicial system — from lawyer to magistrate, high court judge, appeal court justice, and finally Supreme Court justice.
The professor stressed that President Bola Tinubu deserves credit for respecting Section 231 of the Nigerian Constitution during her appointment. According to him, if the president had ignored constitutional provisions, Kekere-Ekun might have been sidelined in favor of other interests, but the process was transparent and constitutional.
He also highlighted the CJN’s focus on integrity, fidelity, and judicial independence, pointing to reforms such as improved welfare for judicial officers, digitalization of court processes, and increased confidence in the system. He recalled how she insisted on due process in Imo State when a junior judge was being considered for chief judge, saying her courage preserved the integrity of the judiciary.
Akbazue concluded that the future of Nigeria’s judiciary looks more promising under her leadership, provided the government continues to support her reforms.
