According to a report by Al Jazeera, Yousef Munayyer, a senior fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC, says US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on Israel’s possible annexation of the occupied West Bank mark a sharp departure from Washington’s traditional stance of unconditional support for Israel.

Earlier, Trump told Time magazine that if Israel proceeds with plans to annex Palestinian territory, the move would have severe consequences for its relationship with Washington. He warned that Israel “would lose all of its support from the United States.”

Reacting to the statement, Munayyer highlighted its significance, noting how rare such language is from an American leader. “I’m not sure any American president has ever laid down such a clear red line relating to an Israeli action,” he wrote on social media.

Munayyer added that while Trump’s declaration “could all be bluster,” the very fact that he said it was unprecedented. “For an American president to utter the words ‘Israel would lose all of its support from the United States’ was previously thought to be sacrilege,” he remarked.

The United States has long been Israel’s most powerful backer, providing tens of billions of dollars in military aid and political cover in international forums. That support has been especially evident during Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, where Washington has supplied advanced weaponry and vetoed multiple UN resolutions critical of Israeli military actions.

Analysts note that this assistance has been crucial in enabling Israel’s sustained offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has caused widespread destruction and humanitarian suffering. Without US military and diplomatic backing, they argue, Israel’s campaign would not have been possible on its current scale.

Munayyer’s observation underscores how Trump’s comments — whether rhetorical or genuine — represent a striking moment in the history of US-Israel relations, suggesting the possibility of limits to American support once seen as untouchable.
