According to an interview on Arise TV, Niger State Governor Umar Bago has strongly defended Nigeria’s long-standing power rotation principle, cautioning northern politicians against any attempt to undermine the arrangement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Bago described the rotation of political power between the northern and southern regions as a stabilizing factor in Nigeria’s democracy. He insisted that any effort to derail this unwritten understanding would be met with widespread resistance. “We have an unwritten agreement that power rotates from the north to the south. Unless someone is an enemy of Nigeria, you wouldn’t want to break that arrangement,” he said, stressing that respect for the system is in the nation’s best interest.
Issuing a firm warning, Bago rejected any suggestion that the north might hold onto power beyond the current administration. “It will not happen. We will resist it. I am from the north, and as a governor from the north, I say clearly that the next leadership must return to the south,” he declared.
The governor also highlighted the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s policies on Niger State, pointing to major infrastructure and agricultural projects funded by federal initiatives. “The president’s policies are working. I’m fixing 25 bridges, constructing 1,000 kilometers of roads, and developing new farms. If the policies were not effective, we wouldn’t have access to these funds,” he explained.
Bago further revealed that Niger State will benefit significantly from upcoming international investments, particularly in agriculture. “I’m going to Brazil with the president. I’ll meet him in Brazil. Out of the $2.5 billion that Brazil is bringing, $1.2 billion is coming to Niger State for livestock,” he announced.
As Director-General of Tinubu’s campaign structure, Bago pledged accountability in assessing state-level performance, promising to present a “report card” on federal allocations and achievements in due course.
