Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, addressed accusations of being a religious bigot for opposing the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in the 2023 election. In an Arise TV interview on May 21, 2025, Lawal expressed indifference to the label, viewing it positively. He stated, “Let them call me a Christian religious bigot; I’m not offended. To me, it’s a compliment.”
Lawal highlighted his deep religious background, noting that he is a trained pastor with a theology degree earned after four years in seminary school. He furthered his studies with a master’s degree in theology, reinforcing his Christian convictions. His opposition to the APC’s same-faith ticket stemmed from concerns about inclusivity in Nigeria’s diverse society, a stance that sparked debate during the 2023 campaign.
Rather than feeling insulted, Lawal embraced the criticism, framing it as recognition of his faith-driven principles. His remarks reflect his unapologetic commitment to his beliefs, despite political tensions, including his 2017 suspension over corruption allegations, which he denied.
In Lawal’s words: “I am a trained pastor, I went to seminary for 4 years and I came out with a degree in it. I augmented my religious background with a masters degree in theology. So if you call me a Christian religious bigot, I am very happy. It is a compliment, it means my lifestyle, my speeches convey the impression that I am a Christian. So I don’t see calling me a religious bigot as an insult”.

Lawal’s stance resonates with ongoing discussions about religious balance in Nigerian politics, particularly in the context of Tinubu’s administration navigating economic and security challenges. By proudly accepting the “bigot” label, Lawal underscores his prioritization of personal conviction over public perception, contributing to the broader discourse on faith, governance, and national unity.
