The President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has issued a stern warning, stating that if the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State leads to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s downfall, the consequences will be severe, and it will become clear that the Ijaw people are not as weak and powerless as perceived.

According to a report by The Guardian, this statement comes amidst a prolonged political dispute in Rivers State, which began when 27 lawmakers, aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The crisis has led to a power struggle between Governor Fubara and Wike, with the lawmakers demanding the resubmission of the 2025 budget and the governor’s recognition of their legitimacy.

The INC’s warning suggests that the organization is prepared to take a strong stance in support of Governor Fubara, who is an Ijaw son.

The statement implies that the Ijaw people will not remain passive if the governor is impeached or removed from office, and that they will take action to protect their interests.

He declared that despite the attacks by the FCT Minister, “Ikwerre and the Ijaw nations can never go into ethnic war. Wike cannot provoke us into ethnic war. The Ikwerre people had apologized to the Ijaw people over the attitude of Wike against Sim.”

Professor Benjamin Okaba dismisses Wike’s comments, saying they wouldn’t engage in a response to someone they consider beneath them, and clarifies that the Ikwerre and Ijaw groups are not at odds, but rather Wike is struggling with his own personal issues.
