The Federal Government has acknowledged a renewed wave of Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East region, pledging intensified efforts to combat the growing threat.
According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Wednesday, 4 June 2025, Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru made the statement during a security briefing noting a disturbing uptick in attacks by insurgents, particularly in Borno and Yobe states.
“If you are following what is happening in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, you will see that these attacks have heightened everywhere,” Badaru said, drawing attention to the wider instability in the Sahel region. He emphasized that the resurgence is part of a broader regional effort by terrorist groups to destabilize West Africa.
“There is a renewed vigour by the insurgents to destabilise the Sahel. We are doing a lot to curtail them, and we will fight it. Normalcy will return by the special grace of God and your prayers,” he added.
Security experts have expressed concern over the spread of extremist influence from the Sahel into Nigeria’s borders, warning of coordinated operations between militant factions across the region. The Minister, however reassured citizens that military operations are being reinforced and collaboration with neighboring countries is ongoing.
In recent weeks, several attacks attributed to Boko Haram and ISWAP have resulted in casualties among both civilians and military personnel. Humanitarian agencies report fresh waves of displacement in parts of Borno, as local populations flee renewed violence.
The Nigerian Armed Forces have continued clearance operations, aerial bombardments, and intelligence-led raids in flashpoint areas but experts stress the need for better regional cooperation, intelligence sharing and local community support to sustain long-term peace.
The Federal Government has urged citizens to remain vigilant, pray for the troops and support ongoing efforts to restore security and stability in the troubled region.
