During an interview with Arise Television, Akin Osuntokun, former Director-General of the Labour Party’s presidential campaign council, offered a sobering perspective on Nigeria’s leadership crisis, suggesting that the country’s real problem goes far beyond just who occupies the presidency.
Osuntokun argued that simply replacing President Bola Tinubu would not solve Nigeria’s foundational issues. According to him, the root of the nation’s crisis lies in the structure of the Nigerian constitution and the system it upholds, not necessarily in the character or competence of the individuals in power.
According to him, “The crisis of Nigeria is not about the replacement of Tinubu. No, it’s not the problem of Nigeria. Believe me, if you replace Tinubu, if you successfully do that, the person who comes in without doing something about the constitution is slightly going to prove worse than the person who is there.”
He emphasized that without addressing the flawed constitutional and structural framework, any successor—regardless of political affiliation—would be handicapped by the same systemic issues. Osuntokun’s remarks come amid growing dissatisfaction with the current administration, but his warning was clear: leadership change without constitutional reform is a revolving door of disappointment.
