Federal lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has lauded the courtroom performance of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as a man of deep intellect who clearly understands the law and the complexities of his ongoing trial.
Speaking during an interview from 12:12 on Arise Television following Thursday’s court proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Aguocha said Kanu’s composure and reasoning during the session revealed that he possesses a strong grasp of legal principles.
“If you were in court today and you listened to Kanu, you will come up with the absolute impression that this is a very cerebral man who understands the law and he understands the challenges that are facing him,” Aguocha stated.
Kanu, who has been facing terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government, surprised many when he informed the court of his decision to personally represent himself rather than continue with his team of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) who had been handling the case. His choice stirred widespread discussions among legal observers and political figures across the country.
Aguocha, who was present in court, clarified that Kanu’s decision was not impulsive but a deliberate one made after careful consultation with his lawyers.
“He made a decision with the lawyers yesterday, which included the senior advocates of Nigeria,” the lawmaker explained. “I’m sure they gave him proper legal advice, and I’m sure that he listened to all their suggestions to him, their briefings to him, and he chose otherwise.”
He further revealed that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), respected Kanu’s constitutional right to self-representation and ensured that due process was followed.
“Like Lateef Fagbemi SAN said today, after the meeting, they came to court to honor the court and as well to honor Mazi Kanu’s request that they be debriefed, and that they respect his opinions,” Aguocha added.
During the hearing, Kanu reportedly made articulate arguments, citing sections of the Nigerian Constitution and previous court rulings to support his case. According to reports, his presentation challenged the legality of his continued detention, referencing the 2022 Court of Appeal decision that discharged and acquitted him of similar charges.
Observers present in the courtroom described the atmosphere as tense yet captivating, with many acknowledging Kanu’s deep knowledge of the legal system despite not being a trained lawyer. His performance has since reignited public conversations about the fairness of his trial and the larger implications for Nigeria’s justice system.
Aguocha used the opportunity to urge the Federal Government to approach Kanu’s case with sensitivity and fairness, arguing that prolonged detention and political tension could deepen existing divisions in the country.
“This is a time for the government to demonstrate leadership, compassion, and wisdom,” he said. “Nigeria needs reconciliation and healing, not endless legal battles.”
The lawmaker, who has consistently advocated for dialogue as a means to address the grievances of the Southeast, also emphasized that Kanu’s comportment in court reflected a readiness for peaceful engagement. “From what I saw in court today, Kanu is calm, measured, and focused. He understands not just his personal legal situation but also the broader context of the struggle he represents,” Aguocha noted.
Legal experts have described Kanu’s decision to represent himself as bold and symbolic. While some argue it could complicate his defense strategy, others believe it underscores his confidence and grasp of the issues at stake.
The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, adjourned the hearing to allow Kanu to file his submissions within the set timeline. Meanwhile, supporters of the IPOB leader continue to demand his release, citing the earlier appellate judgment in his favor.
