Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State has called for the creation of more local government areas (LGAs) in the state, arguing that the current number is unfair compared to other states.

Speaking in a video shared by Symfoni TV, Diri said that the local government areas in Bayelsa and Ribers State combined is still less than the local government areas in some individual states today in Nigeria. He disclosed that Bayelsa has enough resources to sustain additional local governments, yet it remains one of the states with the fewest LGAs.

In Diri’s words: “If you join the local governments from where we were crafted out, Rivers State, with those of Bayelsa, they are not up to the local governments in one state currently today, for a place that has the resources to even create more local governments and sustain them. And that to me is inequity and injustice and they have to be corrected if our democracy must continue to function very well”
