Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu, a politician from Zamfara State, has raised concerns about the growing insecurity in his local government area of Shinkafi. Shuaibu said that the area is currently under the control of armed bandits.
In an interview with Daily Trust TV, Shuaibu said that anyone traveling to Shinkafi faces the risk of being stopped by these bandits who operate there. He said the bandits ask travellers which LGA they come from and those who say they are from Shinkafi are allowed to pass without trouble, but anyone not from Shinkafi is taken aside and abducted.
Shuaibu said the reason why the bandits don’t abduct people from Shinkafi is due to an agreement between Shinkafi elders and a well-known bandit leader, Bello Turji, who is from Shinkafi himself.
In Shuaibu’s words: “It is under siege. Do you know why? If you are traveling to my local government now bandits will stop you and they will ask from where are you coming from. If you say you are from Shinkafi local government they will move you aside. If you are from Kaura, Birnin Magaji or any of the local governments you will go the other way. And those that are not from Shinkafi local government they would take them away and the people from Shinkafi local government would be allowed to go free. There is this dialogue between Shinkafi local government and these bandits.
