According to report by Vanguard on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has advised Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against launching a probe into his immediate predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. Speaking during a visit to the state, Wike urged Okpebholo to instead focus his time and the state’s resources on developmental initiatives that would benefit the people of Edo.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Wike cautioned that investigating Obaseki would be a futile effort with little or no positive outcome. He stressed that while he had personal reasons to support such a probe—given his own troubled political history with Obaseki—he chose to let the past remain in the past.
“If there’s anyone who should be encouraging you to go after Obaseki, it’s me,” Wike remarked. “But what I went through to support him for a second term and how I was repaid is now behind me. We have to move forward for the good of Edo.”
Wike also emphasized that Governor Okpebholo’s emergence was by divine will, not by the might of man. “If it had been up to Obaseki, you wouldn’t be governor today. But God has shown that power belongs to Him,” he said.
In a moment of reflection, Wike publicly apologized once again to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former Edo State governor, for previously siding with Obaseki against him. “I know the pain and humiliation you went through,” Wike admitted. “I was a part of that and I sincerely apologize once more, just as I did on national television.”
He concluded by urging Governor Okpebholo to ignore Obaseki and his allies, and instead channel his efforts toward infrastructure and socio-economic growth. “Forget Obaseki; let him carry his baggage. Focus on Edo’s progress and you’ll be proud of your achievements,” Wike advised.
