Daniel Bwala, a presidential aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has suggested that criticism of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is politically motivated, arguing that northerners would not complain if the project were located in their region.
Speaking during an interview with Daily Trust from 27:48, Bwala characterized opposition to the highway as driven by politics rather than genuine policy concerns. “If that same coastal highway were to be situated in Northern Nigeria, nobody in the North will complain. These are the politics of it. So we have to push aside the politics of it and look at the real situation,” he said.
The presidential aide outlined the broader economic and security benefits he believes the highway will generate. “When you create the coastal highway, there are what we call after-effects of that. You boost security, you create employment, job creation, and then you will boost the economy. So when people make arguments against it, they ought to look at these factors,” Bwala stated.
When asked whether the highway should be prioritized amid ongoing security challenges, the presidential aide defended the administration’s focus on infrastructure. “Infrastructure is very key in the growth of every country. In terms of security, the security of lives and the welfare of the people shall be the primary responsibility of government, and that is what we are doing,” he said.
Bwala pointed to what he described as recent security successes to counter criticism of the government’s security record. “When was the last time we arrested leaders of Boko Haram? When was the last time you saw the surrendering by leaders of bandits? When was the last time? As soon as they abduct people, we recovered them?” he asked. See, More, Here>>>
