According to a report by Channels Television on August 22, 2025, former Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has warned that any decision by Peter Obi to leave the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 elections would have dire consequences — not for Obi himself, but for ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking on Politics Today, Baba-Ahmed stressed that Obi’s political identity and the faith millions of Nigerians placed in him during the 2023 elections were rooted in the Labour Party platform.
He cautioned that a shift to another political structure, such as the coalition being formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), could jeopardize the momentum Obi had built among citizens seeking genuine change.
“If Peter Obi abandons Labour Party, Nigerians will be the ones to pay the price, not him,” Baba-Ahmed declared, insisting that Obi’s loyalty to the party was crucial in preserving the credibility of their movement.
Baba-Ahmed, who partnered with Obi as running mate in the 2023 election, reiterated his full support for Obi’s candidacy in 2027 but emphasized that the struggle was bigger than any single individual.
He argued that Obi’s defection to the ADC — a coalition that features Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola — would create confusion among Nigerians who already view the established political class with suspicion.
According to him, the Labour Party remains the most credible platform for genuine reform, having gained grassroots support from young Nigerians, workers, and civil society. By leaving, Obi would not only damage that foundation but also risk aligning himself with politicians many Nigerians no longer trust.
“I am in the Labour Party. I am a Peter Obi man,” Baba-Ahmed reaffirmed. “I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election.
