As reported by Daily Post on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesman for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stated that President Bola Tinubu will face a more significant challenge in 2027 if former President Goodluck Jonathan enters the race under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Jonathan was referred to by Sowunmi as a potential “wild card” for the opposition.

He made the observation that Jonathan continues to have a significant amount of political support in the South-South.

According to him, if the former president were to announce his intention to run for office, he would also receive votes in the North Belt and the Middle Belt.

There have been discussions inside the PDP on the possibility of Jonathan coming back to run for the party’s ticket.

On the other hand, the former president has decided not to make his plan public.

As various factions within the party continue to campaign for his participation, speculation continues to rise despite the fact that he has not expressed any opinion.

In an interview that took place on a radio program, Sowunmi stated that Jonathan is one of the few politicians who is able to traverse regional boundaries without encountering conflicts of legitimacy.

His emphasis was placed on the fact that the former leader possesses an advantage in areas where Tinubu is currently experiencing difficulties.

Sowunmi advanced the argument that Jonathan’s participation in the race would bring about a shift in the political environment.

He stated that Tinubu would require a more robust plan in order to compete with him.

“A Jonathan will not have any problems with his legitimacy in the North, he will not have any problems with his legitimacy in the South-South, and he will have good voters and supporters in the Middle Belt and the North.

I don’t stare at people who are winking in the dark, and I don’t join others in winking in the dark. Jonathan may be the wild-cat, but he has not yet stated that he will run.

In the event that Jonathan does come out, however, I can assure you that Bola Tinubu would have a more significant challenge on his hands, and he will require a more comprehensive approach than the one he is now employing in order to prevail over him,” he stated.
