The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the just-concluded local government elections in Rivers State, saying the process was peaceful and well-organized.
In a video shared by Channels Television from 4.05, Wike made this statement during his monthly media chat in Abuja while reacting to criticisms from those who called the election an “aberration.” He explained that many people, including State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) chairmen from across Nigeria, contacted him to praise the conduct of the elections.
According to him, they were impressed that within just one month, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSEIC) successfully organized the polls. “When somebody has done well, say the person has done well,” Wike said.
Wike praised the RSEIC chairman and members for what he described as a credible election. He went further to say that if it were up to him, he would recommend them to President Bola Tinubu for national appointments.
“If I have my way, I’ll recommend RSEIC Chairman and members, the president should take them to the national level,” he stated.
He also applauded the security agencies for their role during the exercise. “Look at the conduct of the election. For the first time in our history, there were no gunshots, no snatching of ballot boxes, no kidnapping of returning officers,” Wike stated.
The FCT Minister questioned why people only focused on negative comments instead of commending the positive outcome. He said those criticizing the process were being unfair and ignoring the progress made.
