In a revealing television interview reported by Daily Post on August 2, 2025, Professor Jerry Gana, a senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, admitted that the party’s failure to back Peter Obi in the 2023 elections was a grave error.
Gana stated that, had he been in Atiku Abubakar’s position, he would have endorsed Obi as the vice-presidential candidate, a move he believes could have altered the election’s outcome in favor of the PDP.
Gana criticized the party’s mismanagement of the situation, arguing that supporting Obi would have strengthened the opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to contest the presidency under the Labour Party, garnered significant support, particularly among southern Nigeria’s youth, despite not winning.
Gana now urges Obi to rejoin the PDP, emphasizing that his influence could be pivotal in the 2027 elections. He believes Obi’s potential would be maximized on the PDP platform, with northern voters likely to back him fairly due to his broad appeal.
In his statement, he said, “We made a mistake in 2023. If I were Atiku, I would say, ‘Peter Obi, it is now your turn; I would give you a vice-president,’ but he didn’t.”
Gana’s remarks reflect a strategic push to rectify past mistakes and bolster the PDP’s prospects as Nigeria approaches 2027. His call for Obi’s return underscores the party’s aim to harness his popularity to challenge the APC effectively, fostering unity and leveraging regional support to rebuild a formidable opposition for the upcoming electoral cycle.
