Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Dele Momodu has publicly praised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, hailing him as Nigeria’s most consistent and genuine democrat.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with News Central TV from 19:30, Momodu made it clear that his endorsement of Atiku is rooted in admiration for his character and leadership rather than any financial incentive.
Momodu drew a sharp contrast between Atiku and the current President, Bola Tinubu.
While acknowledging Tinubu’s significant financial influence, Momodu emphasized that Atiku’s appeal lies in his goodwill and humility, qualities that he believes set Atiku apart in Nigeria’s political landscape. “Atiku is the most consummate democrat in Nigeria today,” Momodu said. “I’m not supporting him because I need money. If I wanted money, I would go to Asiwaju. I don’t think Atiku has even 1% of Tinubu’s wealth, but what Atiku has is tremendous goodwill.”
Reflecting on his personal experiences with Atiku, Momodu described the former Vice President’s leadership style as remarkably different from many Nigerian politicians. “Whenever I visit his home, there’s never a tout or security obstacle barring entry,” he recounted. “He might have many children maybe about 30 or more but despite that, I was always free to work and move about without interference. Atiku never once summoned me to question what I was doing.”
Momodu also praised Atiku’s discipline and management acumen, highlighting the former Vice President’s professional approach to both his political and business affairs. “If you visit his office year after year, you’ll see it’s always well-maintained, well-structured, and efficiently staffed,” he noted. “Atiku has been out of power since 2007, and he doesn’t control any state government in Nigeria. Despite this, many people remain envious of him.”
The remarks underscore Momodu’s respect for Atiku’s enduring political influence and personal integrity, painting a picture of a leader who commands respect not through wealth or patronage, but through steadfast democratic values and exemplary conduct.
This endorsement is significant, especially as the political climate in Nigeria continues to evolve ahead of future elections, where Atiku’s role remains pivotal.
