Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South and previously served as Senate Leader in the 8th National Assembly as well as Chief Whip in the 10th, spoke extensively in an interview with The Nigerian Tribune correspondent, about the country’s security challenges.
Drawing on his experience as a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, he addressed concerns about whether Nigeria can rely solely on its own forces without external military assistance.
When asked whether he shared the concerns of his colleague, former Abia Governor Orji Kalu, who suggested that insecurity might be exploited for political reasons; pointing to the alleged use of security challenges to weaken Jonathan and a possible “gang-up” against President Tinubu ahead of 2027; Ndume offered his perspective cautiously, reflecting on the broader implications without fully endorsing the claim.
He said, “That is his opinion. Look, if I know those involved and I have evidence, I will be the first to name them.”
When asked if he considered Orji Kalu’s claim to be a weak allegation, Ndume dismissed it as unsubstantiated. He argued that unless such claims are taken to the relevant security agencies, they remain flimsy.
He suggested that attempts to frame insecurity in political terms were misplaced, noting that the threat is nationwide; spanning the North-East, North-West, North-Central, and South-East; with only the South-West remaining relatively secure.
He stressed that bandits and insurgents do not discriminate based on political affiliation, underscoring that attacks affect everyone, not just members of any particular party. View, More,
