According to a report by The Times of Israel on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Israel’s Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu, a prominent far-right figure, demanded a reassessment of IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir’s leadership.
Eliyahu declared that if Eyal Zamir cannot secure victory in Gaza, he must resign.
He compared Eyal Zamir to World War II generals who allegedly sought peace with Hitler, undermining public confidence in triumph.
However, no notable Allied generals historically pursued such appeasement, rendering Eliyahu’s analogy vague and contentious.
Eliyahu asserted that Eyal Zamir misleads the cabinet and displays weakness in Gaza, despite showing courage against Iran and the Houthis.
He insisted that Eyal Zamir’s inconsistent approach warrants scrutiny of his role.
In his words, “The chief of staff is wrong and misleading the cabinet. If he is brave against Iran and the Houthis but weak against Gaza, we need to reconsider his future.”
Additionally, Eliyahu endorsed imposing martial law in Gaza and extending Israeli sovereignty over the region, reflecting his hardline stance.
The minister’s remarks follow reported tensions between Zamir and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet.
During a Sunday cabinet meeting, Zamir reportedly advocated for a phased hostage deal with Hamas, sparking sharp criticism.
Settlements and National Projects Minister Orit Strock accused Zamir of cowardice, invoking a Biblical verse: “If anyone is afraid and disheartened, let him return home, lest he weaken his comrades’ resolve.”
This rebuke highlighted deep divisions over Gaza strategy.
Eliyahu’s call for reevaluating Zamir’s tenure underscores broader political friction within Israel’s leadership.
