According to reports in The Cable, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, a prominent religious figure and former Archbishop of Abuja, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Tinubu, suggesting his current policies are alienating the Nigerian populace. He argues that unless the president fundamentally shifts his approach, his chances of re-election in a transparent, free, and fair process are slim.
Onaiyekan’s comments, made during a public lecture in Abuja, highlight a perceived disconnect between the government’s actions and the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
He urged President Tinubu to actively seek firsthand understanding of the nation’s economic hardship, moving beyond the often-filtered perspectives of his close advisors.
The cardinal emphasized the deteriorating living conditions experienced by many Nigerians, calling on the president to prioritize policies that directly uplift the poor. He stressed that tangible improvements in the well-being of the average citizen are crucial.
“But if he continues like this for the rest of his term, if we have a free and fair election, he will not win. Because how can the country bring him back if we are not feeling good?” Onaiyekan stated.
He further suggested that with two years left to the end of his term, President Tinubu has an opportunity to redirect his administration’s focus.
Onaiyekan implored the president to concentrate on security, economic improvement, and combating corruption, ultimately urging him to govern with empathy and address the plight of the Nigerian people.
