Public Affairs Analyst Majeed Dahiru claims that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai could potentially help unseat Nigeria’s ruling party if he throws his support behind Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
During an interview with Channels TV, Dahiru emphasized El-Rufai’s significant influence in northern Nigeria, particularly among Muslim voters. “El-Rufai has a grouse against the president, a legitimate grouse, because he worked for the president,” Dahiru stated. “Hate him or love him, he has a basis to be angry, and he has been working to undermine the president, particularly in the Muslim North, where he’s like the next man to Buhari. He’s like the brainbox of the Muslim North.”
He suggested that El-Rufai could leverage his influence to dramatically alter Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next election. “If he really wants to get back at the president, let me tell you what he would do, and I think they may, they may be on the path to really achieving that,” Dahiru explained. “Let El-Rufai convince the Muslim North; if he’s able to do that, I know he has the capacity to look towards the South for a candidate to support, specifically the Southeast.”
The analyst concluded with a bold prediction: “In fact, let me put it straight: If El-Rufai galvanizes the Northerners to zero down on Peter Obi, that will be the end of Tinubu’s government.”
