In a live coverage by AIT from 3:03, Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives, stated that Section 84 (15) of Nigeria’s constitution clearly states that no court has the authority to stop elections or party primaries.
Ugochinyere made this statement while speaking about the Federal High Court judgment against the conduct of the Rivers LGA elections. He said that “if court stops election because of former Governor Nyesom Wike,” it could set a dangerous precedent.
Ugochinyere said that allowing courts to halt elections could lead to severe disruptions in future electoral processes, including the governorship and presidential elections in 2027.
In Ugochinyere’s words: “If because of Wike’s interest court stops election, what will happen in 2027 general elections? Governorship election will be stopped, presidential election will be stopped; throwing us back to the collation process crisis that made Abiola lose the victory he won, that brought back the military”.
