According to a report by The Sun on Monday, July 28, 2025, Abumchukwu N. Okoye, the National Coordinator of the Take Back Nigeria Initiative (TBNI), has taken a swipe at the coalition of opposition parties, describing them as mere power seekers without any real plan to improve the country.
He made these remarks while speaking on key national issues and the political future of the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Okoye, the coalition of opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, lacks the unity and direction necessary to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a meaningful way.
He argued that most of the politicians in the alliance are simply aiming to regain relevance rather than offer genuine leadership solutions to Nigerians.
He said the coalition is not built on ideology but rather on desperation and political survival.
Citing the 2023 elections, he pointed out that if Atiku Abubakar had supported Peter Obi as the presidential candidate under the PDP platform, they could have succeeded in unseating the current administration.
However, because of conflicting interests, the opportunity was missed, and that same mistake is repeating itself as the 2027 race draws nearer.
Okoye further stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not likely to be defeated by this coalition if Atiku remains the presidential flagbearer.
He believes the political landscape still favors the ruling APC, especially with the South still expected to complete its eight years in power before any talk of the presidency returning to the North.
In his words, more notable figures from the opposition camp will soon jump ship and join the APC.
He argued that the current wave of political realignment is being driven by both personal interest and the realization that the opposition lacks a convincing plan or the internal cohesion to take over power.
This, he said, would become more visible before the end of the year.
He also noted that Nigeria’s democracy is evolving and must be protected by genuine patriots, not just those who appear every election cycle to make noise.
He said: If Atiku had supported Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of PDP in 2023, they would have won. I don’t see the coalition dethroning President Tinubu with Atiku as its presidential candidate.
However, the South must complete their eight years before power will go back to the North. So, more key members of the opposition will defect to APC before the end of the year, because democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people.
