Chief Nelson Ahamuefula Akuma, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated during an interview with The Sun that the defeat of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election does not depend on Tinubu himself, but rather on the strength and unity of the opposition.

In response to a question on whether a coalition could unseat Tinubu and the APC, he expressed confidence that if the ADC selects the right presidential candidate, a new occupant could emerge in Aso Rock by 2027.

He argued that the hardship and hunger experienced by Nigerians had already done over 70 percent of the work needed to unseat the president, adding that it would only take 30 percent more effort from ADC—through a strong candidate and the backing of influential figures—for the party to secure victory.

Further talking, he said, “For instance, if Atiku Abubakar galvanised the north and Peter Obi galvanised the south, where would Tinubu votes come from? As we say in our parlance, hunger does not have tribe or religion. Nobody is buying fuel cheaper than the other because he is Yoruba, Hausa, or Igbo.”

Akuma further noted that given the current hardship Nigerians are facing, it is unlikely that many people would be willing to vote for President Tinubu in 2027.

He maintained that this is why he believes Tinubu no longer holds the key to his own political future. According to him, it is now up to the opposition coalition to determine whether Tinubu remains in office beyond 2027.
