Kassim Afegbua, a former spokesperson of former military Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), has shared how General Mamman Vatsa tried to escape from house arrest after denying involvement in a coup plot against Babangida in 1985

During an exclusive interview with Plus TV Africa, Afegbua said Babangida asked Vatsa if he was involved in the coup plot and he denied. He said Babangida then placed Vatsa under house arrest.

Afegbua revealed that while in confinement, Vatsa attempted to escape through an air conditioning vent but got stuck, with his stomach wedged in the hole. He said Vatsa eventually called for help and when Babangida found out what happened, he questioned why Vatsa tried to escape if he was truly innocent. Afegbua said investigations later showed that Vatsa was guilty of participating in the coup plot.

In Afegbua’s words: “IBB said they should keep Vatsa in house arrest and he tried to escape through the AC hole but his stomach got stuck in between and he called for help”
