Former Minister of Transportation and 2023 presidential aspirant, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that his administration would prioritise transparency, accountability, and prudent use of public resources if he is elected president in 2027.
According to the report by The Cable on Saturday, the former Rivers State governor promised to channel funds saved from the removal of petrol subsidy directly into national development projects that would benefit ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking during a conversation on X Space, Amaechi criticised the current administration’s handling of subsidy funds, alleging that the proceeds are being siphoned off by a small group of federal officials and state governors for personal luxury.
He said that would not happen in his administration, as he would personally supervise the government.
He made it clear that he is opposed to the return of petrol subsidies, describing them as harmful to Nigeria’s economy.
However, he maintained that the current implementation of subsidy removal is flawed, with the expected economic benefits not reaching the masses.
He said, “I will supervise my government. I won’t bring back subsidy, that’s impossible, because the situation is bad in terms of the economy of Nigeria.
“But I have also said that the subsidy removal is not successful. Money is going into private pockets. I will ensure the outcome of the removal of the subsidy is put back in the hands and pockets of Nigerians.”
He said that the rate of poverty in the country would reduce if that were done, and that the country would then have the capacity to purchase.
Amaechi’s comments reflect growing public frustration over the rising cost of living and allegations of mismanagement following the removal of fuel subsidies.
Many Nigerians had expected the policy shift to free up funds for infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other critical sectors, but critics argue that the benefits have yet to materialise.
