Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi has shared his experience with free and fair elections under former President Goodluck Jonathan. Speaking at a recent book launch, Obi explained how he insisted on an honest election during his time as governor.
In a video that was shared by SYMFONI TV, Obi recalled going to Jonathan before his second-term election and telling him he wanted only the votes that truly belonged to him. He didn’t want extra votes or any manipulation. He urged Jonathan to ensure the election was free and fair, with no interference from security agencies or election officials.
According to Obi, Jonathan listened and allowed the election to be conducted fairly. Even when members of Jonathan’s party, the PDP, entered Anambra State, Obi called Jonathan and requested that they leave. Within minutes, the president took action, and the outsiders left.
Obi emphasized that the quality of elections depends on the people in charge. If leaders are honest, elections will be fair. But if politicians try to rig elections, the process becomes corrupt. He also linked bad elections to broader problems, saying that when politicians set bad examples by cheating, it encourages dishonesty in society.
For Obi, the key to security and good governance is honesty in leadership. If elections are free and fair, people will trust their leaders and the country will be more peaceful. He believes that election policing is easy when politicians are not trying to steal votes.
