Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, has revealed his involvement with the Okija shrine. The senator said that he was taken to Okija shrine unwillingly to swear an oath of loyalty a few days before his election.
According to a report by the Vanguard News on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Senator Chris Ngige said, “I was taken to Okija shrine by force. By midnight, I didn’t know where we were going, and it was a few days to my election. So they said we must go there to swear an oath of loyalty.”
Explaining his involvement, Ngige said he didn’t know where they were going, but he went with his Bible and holy water. The senator said he knows shrines and small deities don’t work, and he knows God is above all of them.
Senator Chris Ngige recounted that when they got to the shrine, one of the individuals there chose to swear an oath on his behalf. However, upon becoming governor and receiving security reports detailing the shrine’s fraudulent activities, Ngige stated that former President Olusegun Obasanjo ordered the dismantling of the shrine, reportedly instructing the Inspector General of Police to direct the Commissioner of Police to take action.
