According to a report by Daily Post, former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has shared a dramatic account of how he believes divine intervention guided him safely during a perilous road journey from Kano to Kaduna.
Amaechi made the revelation while speaking at the ninth edition of the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation (AAF) Annual Leadership Discourse held in Lagos.
According to the former minister, the incident occurred after attending the installation of a new Emir in Kano.
He did not disclose which monarch was involved but noted that he was accompanied by former Gombe State Governor, Danjuma Goje; former PDP Chairman, Abubakar Kawu Baraje; and current Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.
In his narration, Amaechi explained that they had attempted to book commercial airline tickets with Aero Contractors to depart Kano, only to be told that their request was denied.
“I asked, ‘Why? I thought they said only commercial aircraft could go, not private jets.’ However, they came back and said, ‘No, you can’t go,’” he said.
While contemplating alternative plans, Amaechi said a former State Security Service (SSS) director who had served under him in Rivers State—now posted to Kano—entered and urged him to leave the state immediately.
“He told me, ‘Oga, you must leave Kano now, even if it means sleeping in Bichi.’ At the time, I didn’t even know where Bichi was.
He warned, ‘I can’t account for your life,’” Amaechi recalled. Despite his earlier intention to head to the Government House, the SSS official strongly advised against it.
With security support arranged, the group set out by road. Amaechi recounted how, along the way, his companions fell asleep, leaving him as the lone driver.
“Goje was about to cry before he fell asleep. Baraje and Professor Gambari were already sleeping. I was the only one awake and driving.”
He said he managed to stay alert until reaching Zaria, where he stopped briefly. But fatigue quickly took over as they continued toward Abuja.
“From Kaduna, God drove us because I was sleeping,” he said. “I even stopped in Kaduna and bought six cans of Red Bull. It didn’t work.”
According to Amaechi, the rest of the journey to Abuja was completed while he dozed behind the wheel, a situation he believes could only have ended safely through divine intervention.
