A Nigerian woman named Peace has shared the heartbreaking story of her time in a Malaysian prison, where she was separated from her sick baby due to harsh conditions and racism. Speaking on the Brekete Family programme, she described how a kind white inmate and her mother helped her care for her son during this difficult period.

Peace said the suffering was too much for her baby, who was often sick. “The country then was around 2011 when I was arrested until 2013. They were racist; they didn’t like black people, and my baby is very dark. Whenever my baby was sick and I went to get water, they just chased me away,” she recalled.

The baby’s health deteriorated to the point she almost lost him. “That was when a kind white girl in prison told me about her mom who was willing to take care of my son.”

This introduction led to involvement with the Nigerian embassy. “That’s how the embassy helped me send my son back to Nigeria. The woman cared for him for two months while the embassy prepared his passport. I still have my son’s passport here.”

Peace lost her drug trafficking case and was sentenced to death by hanging on May 12th, 2015. However, she said that same month, then US President Barack Obama visited Malaysia and appealed on behalf of foreign prisoners to amend the harsh drug laws. “They ended hanging sentences for women but changed it to life imprisonment.”
