Security expert Dennis Amachree has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s budgetary allocations to security in the face of persistent underperformance by military forces in insurgency-affected areas. During a live interview on Channels Television, Amachree expressed shock and sadness after hearing Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State practically “begging for aid” during a high-level security meeting.
In a video that has sparked widespread reactions, Governor Zulum expressed deep frustration over the persistent attacks on communities in Borno State despite the federal government’s massive financial commitment to security. He pointed out a glaring disconnect between the huge budgetary allocations and the actual conditions on the ground, where troops reportedly still face equipment shortages.
Reacting to this, Amachree said: “You heard the governor of Borno State. I was very sad when I heard him begging for aid to come to him, because our own military, according to him, require new arms and ammunition. What does that mean? We spend a lot of money on arms, so what’s going on?”
The former DSS official called for greater transparency in Nigeria’s defense spending, noting that the country cannot continue to allocate trillions of naira to security annually while soldiers on the frontline remain poorly equipped.
Amachree added, “The North East has been in crisis for over a decade. If the governor is still crying for help, then we need to audit the entire security structure. Something is not right.”
Governor Zulum’s outburst comes amid renewed Boko Haram activity and widespread concern that federal support to conflict-ridden areas is dwindling. Stakeholders at the meeting echoed the need for better coordination between the military and local authorities, with many insisting that it is time for results, not rhetoric.
