Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. He addressed the matter during the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday, following a week-long recess. Akpabio firmly dismissed the claims, stating, “At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised by my late single mother to respect women and was once recognized as the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria.” He also urged Nigerians and the media to avoid premature conclusions and allow due process to take its course.

Despite Akpabio’s denial, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan formally raised a petition under Senate Order 40, accusing him of sexual harassment and abuse of office. She sought permission to present her petition before the chamber, which was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct for investigation.

The allegations have sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria. Akpoti-Uduaghan claims that her refusal of Akpabio’s alleged advances led to political retaliation, including blocking her motions in the Senate. She has reportedly provided evidence, including screenshots of conversations, and called for a thorough investigation. Civil society groups and prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have also weighed in, urging an impartial probe into the matter to uphold public trust in the Senate.

The controversy has reignited discussions about sexual misconduct in public office. Critics argue that such allegations tarnish the integrity of Nigeria’s legislative body and demand accountability from its leaders. Meanwhile, some Senators have downplayed the issue, with Senate Committee Chairman Yemi Adaramodu describing it as “a storm in a teacup” and emphasizing adherence to parliamentary rules.

As tensions escalate, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called for protecting the institution’s integrity rather than focusing on individuals. The Senate Committee is expected to review Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition promptly, while public scrutiny remains high over how this case will be handled.
