A tragic incident happened on July 5, 2025, in Choba, Rivers State, involving a 25-year-old pregnant university student, Cynthia Chukwunda, and her estranged lover, Sunny Amadi. Sunny later died from burns after a fire outbreak in Cynthia’s room.
According to a report by Sun on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Cynthia, who is eight months pregnant and a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, said she did not set Sunny on fire as some people claimed. Speaking from her hospital bed, Cynthia explained that she had not seen Sunny in over six months. According to her, they were no longer in a relationship and their past together was filled with fights and quarrels.
She said Sunny had been calling and texting her recently, but she didn’t want anything to do with him anymore because she now has someone who wants to marry her.
On the day of the incident, Cynthia went out to buy something and returned to find Sunny in her room. She said she was surprised and upset. After some arguments, she asked him to leave. While trying to make him leave, Cynthia said she noticed a plastic bottle Sunny brought and saw he had lit a candle.
“I was pushing him to leave the house. I didn’t want to see him in my house because, already, I have somebody who wants to get married to me,” she said.
Cynthia claimed the bottle contained fuel and that during their argument, it accidentally caught fire when Sunny pushed it near the candle. The fire spread quickly, and both of them were burned. She ran out to save herself, but Sunny was badly injured and later died.
Cynthia, now recovering in the hospital, insists she never planned to harm him and is unsure of what Sunny’s true intentions were that day.
