According to a report by Symfoni TV on Monday, August 11, 2025, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration offered him multiple opportunities to work in government, but he turned them down, insisting he is not seeking political positions for personal gain.

Speaking during a public presentation from 2:16, Obi emphasised his commitment to genuine change in Nigeria over the pursuit of power: “Presentation in our assembly, where nobody can leave his party after election. If you want to change party, go to the election. After election, you must tell them, if you vacate, they replace the person. So, which party am I going to contest? As you know, because of the problem they have. We do. Some of us who are leaders in the opposition, have at present adopted ADC. But I can tell you, before the election, more will join. More people will come together. Because the opposition needs to come together.”

Obi clarified that his political involvement is driven by a desire for reform, not personal ambition: “We are not coming together to wrestle power. If it is wrestling power, count me Peter Obi out of it. If we are not going to use that power to change the fortune of this country, please, count me out of it. I am not looking for political position. I am not desperate to be president of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria change.”

He said his experiences abroad and visits to educational institutions have shaped his vision for governance: “I live in a changed place. And I tell people that. I live in a place that works. I have been to schools. People have asked me questions. Peter, why did you go to all these schools? I went to them because I wanted to know what I was going to do in a different place.”

Obi also addressed the Labour Party’s internal challenges: “As we advance now, we have adopted ADC. For 2017 election, we are still battling to take over Labour. Because that is the right thing. There was nothing wrong. What was wrong in Labour is that we found out that people are buying down what we are trying to build into transactions. That is a mess. So, that was this. There is nothing wrong. That is the only thing that is wrong. We don’t want to build transactional politics. I was offered a lot by this government. I could have been anything. But that is not what it is. So, that is it.”
