According to Punch, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has revealed that he was deeply provoked by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks during his 65th birthday celebration — to the point where he momentarily felt like grabbing the microphone and striking the former leader with it.

While acknowledging Fayose’s political journey, Obasanjo again described him as “not the best” among his political protégés, a comment that immediately stirred fresh controversy.
Fayose, after the ceremony, reportedly sent Obasanjo a message intended as a formal expression of appreciation for attending the occasion.
However, he used the opportunity to accuse the former President of making “irresponsible comments.”
Obasanjo later responded, informing Fayose that he had returned the money forwarded to him for the event, signaling that the disagreement between them had not eased.
Speaking in an interview with AF24 News, uploaded to the platform’s YouTube channel on Monday, Fayose narrated the full sequence of events.
He emphasized that at the celebration, Obasanjo repeated the same criticism by labeling him “not the best” of his protégés, even as he acknowledged that Fayose had accomplished significant political feats.
This remark, according to Fayose, triggered a strong emotional reaction.
“I was enraged. I felt like taking the mic from Obasanjo’s hand and hitting it on his head. This is being sincere,” he said, explaining that the statement cut deeply because it came at a moment meant for celebration rather than conflict.
Fayose further explained that two weeks before the birthday event, he had made a personal decision to mend fences with people he had clashed with politically over the years.
He said he had reached out to several individuals, including Obasanjo, with a message of reconciliation.
His intention, he stated, was to let go of old grievances and encourage others to do the same.
