A renowned journalist and academic, Professor Chidi Amuta, has shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story about his role at the 60th birthday celebration of Nigeria’s former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
In a video shared by Symfoni TV via YouTube,, Prof. Amuta recounted how he was initially hesitant when he received an invitation to deliver a public lecture titled “Poverty and Hunger in Nigeria” as part of the birthday activities.
“When I got the invitation to deliver this message, I was a bit troubled,” Prof. Amuta said while speaking at the podium. “But it was Rotimi himself who picked up the phone to call me. He said, ‘Boss, you are the one to take the lecture.’ I asked, ‘What is the problem? What’s the subject of the lecture?’ He said, ‘It’s about poverty and hunger.’ I asked, ‘For what occasion?’ He said, ‘My birthday.’ I said, ‘Which birthday?’ He replied, ‘I’m 60.’ I said, ‘You, 60 already?’ And we laughed over it.”
The choice of such a serious topic for a birthday event drew attention, with many noting Amaechi’s decision to use the milestone as a platform to spark a national conversation on urgent socio-economic issues.
The lecture, delivered by Prof. Amuta, reportedly delved into the root causes of poverty in Nigeria and the urgent need for structural reforms.
Amaechi’s 60th birthday has since stirred conversations online, not just for the celebration itself, but for its reflective tone and the intellectual depth of the event.
