In an exclusive interview on Arise TV, Senator George Sekibo, a former lawmaker representing Rivers East Senatorial District, has weighed in on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, expressing deep concern over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s recent remarks suggesting he is no longer interested in governing the state.

Reacting to reports that Governor Fubara was overheard saying “his spirit has left Government House” and he no longer wishes to return, Senator Sekibo stated emphatically, “If truly his spirit has left Government House, let him resign.”

Sekibo, a leading member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the governor for failing to follow proper political and legal processes after the Supreme Court’s verdict affirmed the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly. “What he ought to have done, if he were a trained politician, is to immediately make contact with members of the Assembly. He didn’t try,” Sekibo said.

He also accused Fubara of ignoring constitutional procedures and neglecting the counsel of key figures in the state’s political structure, including former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. “To be a governor of a state, the constitution is your radar,” Sekibo emphasized, adding that the governor’s disregard for the law and his indecision are contributing to instability in the state.

Addressing the broader implications for the PDP, Sekibo defended Wike’s continued involvement in the party, insisting that his loyalty remains with the PDP despite serving in an APC-led federal administration. “Wike is not a member of APC. He is still a bonafide member of PDP,” he said, adding that Wike’s actions aim at revitalizing the party rather than undermining it.

Sekibo called on the PDP to heed Wike’s warning not to repeat its 2023 mistake by zoning the presidency to the North in 2027, saying, “He is giving them expo. If they don’t listen, it is their loss.”

“He also referenced what Wike said during the 2023 election: ‘I want a southerner to become president, so this is the person who can win the election’.”

While acknowledging the governance crisis in Rivers State, Sekibo placed the blame squarely on Governor Fubara’s shoulders. “There is no political crisis in Rivers State,” he insisted. “There is a governance crisis, and that is because the governor has refused to act in accordance with legal and political expectations.”

Sekibo concluded by calling for clarity and responsibility: “If he [Fubara] doesn’t want to go back to Government House, he should not keep the Rivers people in suspense. Let him resign.
