Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has provided an update on the status of her security details following their withdrawal on Thursday. The development comes amid a leadership crisis within the Assembly, which has seen heightened tensions and a power struggle among lawmakers.
Speaking with reporters in a video posted by TVC News from 1:08, Meranda expressed concerns over the drastic reduction in her security personnel, emphasizing the vulnerabilities she now faces.
“I have, I think, three or four policemen, whereas my usual convoy includes twelve policemen, four DSS operatives, and two anti-robbery officers. But as of this morning, I do not have that,” she stated.
The withdrawal of her security details reportedly occurred on Thursday morning, leading to increased tension within the Assembly complex. The situation escalated further with the return of impeached former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who, accompanied by armed security operatives, forcefully resumed office and presided over a plenary session with a faction of four lawmakers.
While addressing journalists on Friday, Meranda was asked to confirm if her security details had been restored. She responded cautiously, saying, “Well, as you can see, I have my people here with me, and God is with me.” However, she did not explicitly state whether her full security detail had been reinstated.
When pressed further about the events leading up to the crisis, Meranda acknowledged that Obasa, despite his impeachment, remained a member of the House of Assembly and had the right to be present.
However, she condemned the manner in which he attempted to reclaim his position. “Invasion and breaking into my office—that is really serious,” she remarked.
