Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has stated that he informed Peter Obi before attending a controversial meeting of the party, as reported by Daily Post on Wednesday, 23 July, 2025.
The meeting was held by the faction led by Julius Abure, who is facing opposition within the party.
Baba-Ahmed said that Peter Obi did not oppose his decision to attend the meeting.
He explained that Obi was aware of his movements and trusted him to act with good judgment.
He said Obi had been very busy recently, according to him, Obi dealt with personal family issues, attended the burial of former President Buhari in Daura, and faced resistance from a governor who didn’t want him visiting his state.
Baba-Ahmed explained that if they had been elected into office, some responsibilities would have fallen on him.
He said he still carries out some of those duties because he believes they are part of their shared mission.
He described Obi as someone who allows people close to him to act with independence and initiative.
He added that Obi was not left out of any major decisions and was always aware of his actions.
The Labour Party is currently facing a serious internal crisis.
The party is now divided into two factions.
One faction is led by Julius Abure, while the other is under interim chairman Nenadi Usman.
Many members of the party believe that Abure’s tenure as national chairman has ended.
A court has also ordered him to stop presenting himself as the national chairman.
However, Abure continues to lead one side of the party and still organizes meetings like the one Baba-Ahmed attended.
“I need to understand that Peter Obi’s cup is full. And maybe he is shy to tell me to go and do these things. He knows everything I do. I carry him along.
Peter Obi is a very easy person. He leaves you to use your judgement and initiative. He was fully in the picture,” he said.
