Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, has revealed that he advised Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP months ago, stressing that the party owes the South-East a presidential ticket.
Speaking in an interview Nigeria Info FM, Sowunmi disclosed that he personally reached out to Obi about three to four months ago, urging him to take advantage of PDP’s rotational understanding and his demonstrated capacity.
“I said to Peter Obi about three or four months ago: Peter, it’s time to return to the PDP now because the PDP owes the Igbos a ticket based on the fact that they have given every other zone apart from the South-East, and you have demonstrated capacity. Come now,” he stated.
The PDP chieftain, however, criticized Obi’s political style, describing him as someone who avoids the party’s internal democratic process. According to Sowunmi, “The only issue is that Peter thinks he’s too clever. Peter never wants to do primaries. Any politician that doesn’t want to do primaries is looking for someone to cheat on his behalf. Primaries are the internal democracy of parties. It’s only after you cross the hurdle of primaries that you can now look toward the general election.”
He further argued that Obi had previously been given a platform but failed to manage it effectively. “Unfortunately, even when Peter was given a platform, he couldn’t manage it,” Sowunmi remarked.
